PROmotion of Breastfeeding Intervention Trial (PROBIT)
There is this PROBIT trial that aims to look at the benefits of breastfeeding. It aims to answer the question - Does prolonged and exclusive breastfeeding reduce the risk of asthma and atopic eczema and improve lung function in adolescence?
PROBIT is the largest randomized trial ever carried out in the area of human lactation and continue to contribute to research through ongoing follow-up.
The findings was that out of 13 557 Belarus participants, there was a 54% reduction in atopic eczema on skin examination for 16 year-old for those exclusive breastfed for at least 3 months but no significant effect on lung function (spirometry) and self-reported asthma diagnosis and symptoms of atopic eczema and wheezing in the past year.
